A classic and elegant maritime history mug, with the nautical term 'To the bitter end' In the age of sailing ships, the bitter end (or bitt end) refers to the final part of the anchor rope or cable. This rope was fixed to the ship’s deck. The bitter end gets its name from the wooden posts (or bitts) on the deck to which the anchor rope was secured. By securing the anchors to these bitts, they would not run free and be lost over the side to the sea.
